Saturday December 6th: Small-business crawl!

There will be no regular PHDC meeting in December. We were inspired by the presentation at our November meeting by IndivisibleSF D10 lead, PHDC member Jacky Morales Ferrand, to do something different. In the spirit of the season. Let’s help keep workers and residents safe by reaching out to local businesses to make sure they know their legal rights and responsibilities in the event of a federal agent raid. We’ll ask the merchants to put a welcoming sign in their window (shown below), and share other steps they can take.

At Goat Hill Pizza’s recent 50th birthday party, founder Philip De Andrade enthusiastically agreed to be the first merchant to participate. If you want to join our Small-Business Crawl on December 6 – or maybe a day in the future; this is an ongoning campaign – please let us know by emailing contact_us@phdemclub.org . To find out more, you can sign up for an optional online training offered by Jobs with Justice: every other Tues 5:30-6:30pm, or every Wed 12-1:00pm. Meanwhile, Happy Thanksgiving!

Potrero Hill Democratic Club Action instead of Meeting

Defying anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy: following up with resources

Potrero Hill Democratic Club monthly meeting

Tuesday, March 4, 6:30pm

Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

Panel discussion: The state of immigration today – impacts, risks, and actions we can take. Cruel, outrageous policies and directives – targeting immigrants, their families, and others – affect all of us. Sharing their perspectives in a lively discussion on the situation were:

  • Kim Tavaglione, Executive Director, San Francisco Labor Council
  • Sarah Souza, activist & DACA recipient
  • Father Gregory Houck, pastor, St Teresa’s church
  • Sister Lucia Lodolo, pastoral associate, St Teresa’s church, with parishioner Rose Marie Ostler

Educator & PHDC board member Sara O’Neill ably moderated.

City Attorney David Chiu opened the program with a few words about what he’s been up to regarding this issue, beginning with challenging the president’s unconstitutional executive order to end birthright citizenship. His office is working nonstop to protect our democracy.

Here are some resources shared by the panelists:

24 Hour Hotline – ONLY to report ICE activity within San Francisco.   The number is 415-200-1548. They have language capacity in Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin). They usually have just 1 dispatcher at a time, so if the line is busy it is because they are speaking with someone else. In order to make sure that they respond to callers in a timely manner they ask that individuals calling use the line only to report ICE activity in San Francisco. Alameda County also has a hotline at 510-241-4011.

  • Raid Verification – Raid verification for all calls of alleged ICE Enforcement activity within San Francisco. Raid verification is an important component of our work in order to dispel myths and lessen fear.  They physically go and verify or announce false alarms to rumors about ICE activity.
  • Attorney Activation – If an individual is detained after an ICE raid or ICE Activity they will activate our attorneys to go down to 630 Sansome (immigration processing center) to file for representation of the individual.   They will also work to secure long-term representation if the person needs it.

Tuesday June 14th: Budget Battles for City College & Climate Action

Please join us again at the historic, beautiful Neighborhood House in person. Masks and proof of vaccination are required to enter the building. Light snacks will be served.

  • WHAT: PHDC’s June membership meeting
  • WHEN: Tuesday, June 14th, 6:30 – 8:30pm
  • WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

We will hear two points of view about CCSF’s budget: AFT 2121 president Mary Bravewoman and Labor Council delegate Tim Killikelly will speak to us about opposing future cuts, and supporting an initiative to bring new revenue to CCSF. CCSF Chancellor David Martin will speak from the perspective of the administration, and may be joined by a member of the Board of Trustees.

We will hear what the Mayor has allocated for equitable – or any – climate action in her June 1st budget proposal: nothing! But it’s not over yet. Joni Eisen of SF Climate Emergency Coalition will describe how those who care about a livable planet for our children and grandchildren are turning to the Board of Supervisors, who will spend most of this month deciding what and how much to “add back” to the Mayor’s budget.

Tues March 5: The SF Labor Landscape

Labor unions have a long history in San Francisco, and continue to be a significant force in the San Francisco business community and government. This Tuesday March 5, we’ll have several speakers that will discuss current issues in labor that affect San Francisco and Potrero Hill.

Among our guests:

  • Rudy Gonzalez, Executive Director from the San Francisco Labor Council.
  • A representative from the United Educators of San Francisco.
  • And more!

WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

Tues Nov 7th:

Dan Bernal, Congressional Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi‘s SF Chief of Staff, will discuss and answer your questions about  the insanity of the past year on Capitol Hill.

Closer to home, familiar ally Jon Golinger will discuss and read from his new book: Saving San Francisco’s Heart: How to win elections, reclaim our city, and keep SF a special place.

Also: PHDC’s Executive Committee voted to support the San Francisco Living Wage Coalition‘s efforts to win pay increases for 25,000 low-wage workers in San Francisco, and will bring it to the membership for ratification.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 7, 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro @ Southern Hts

Tuesday, October 3rd: Live phonebanking, SF’s Living Wage Law, & more

At Tuesday’s meeting, we’ll bring this year’s ongoing phonebanking directly into our club! If you’ve never phonebanked, or if you are phonebank-curious, this will be a fun and easy introduction, brought to us by our allies at DemocracyAction to what it’s like, and why it’s important. We’ll also hear about (and vote whether to support) efforts to raise San Francisco’s Living Wage.

And more: our PHDC booth at the Potrero Hill Festival Saturday, October 21st; a report from the Rock the Congress conference a couple of weeks back in Marin County, to unite Democrats as we head into 2018; what’s happening (finally, after 7 years, maybe some good news?) with the California DISCLOSE Act. We’ll also begin planning for our Holiday Party and our actions for the coming months. Join us on Tuesday!

WHEN: Tuesday, October 3, 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro @ Southern Hts

Tuesday, May 3rd: Socializing with DCCC candidates, solidarity with hospitality workers

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 2.00.24 PMSome of our endorsed candidates for the SF DCCC came for a meet-and-greet. The SF Democratic County Central Committee, the governing body of the SF Democratic Party, registers voters and makes endorsements. Their citywide election mailers powerfully influence Democratic voters to support or oppose particular candidates and ballot measures. But we believe the DCCC has veered off-course in recent years, and needs reform. Real reform, not real estate rule.

Also, Antonio Arenas of UNITE HERE! Local 2, which represents over 12,000 hospitality workers in San Francisco and San Mateo, discussed the boycott at non-union hotels Le Meridien and Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 3rd at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro @ Southern Heights

Tuesday, June 3rd (election night) Sheriff’s update; Campaign for a Healthy California

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi (right) gave an update on happenings in and around the SF Sheriff’s Department, including a number of initiatives regarding public safety and rehabilitation both inside and outside the jail system.

Ed Kinchley, SEIU 2121’s political education co-chair, talked about the Campaign for a Healthy California, whose mission is to “finish the job on health reform” by eventually replacing private health insurance with guaranteed healthcare for all Californians.

The Club voted to join Campaign for a Healthy California’s coalition as an endorser.

Because the theater was in use as a polling place, we met downstairs in the Game Room.

WHEN: Tuesday June 3 at 7:00pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St @ Southern Heights

Tues Jan 7: AT&T Park labor struggle

To begin our  eighth year, PHDC had several things on the agenda:

● Presentation by Ubring your own foodNITE HERE Local 2, representing the 750 concession workers at AT&T Park. Employed by a subcontractor called Centerplate, they are involved in a difficult campaign to achieve a fair contract  and haven’t had a wage increase or new contract since April 2010. Workers who shared their stories were Bobby McCall and Patricia Ramirez, joined  by union organizer Julia Wong. Following the meeting, PHDC held an online vote and passed a resolution in support of the concession workers.

● A check-in with members to assess which topics & issues they would most like the Club to take on. People voted by pinning dots on the donkey next to their choices.

● Nominations opened for 2014 officers (election in Feb).

WHEN: Tuesday, January 7th at 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

Tuesday, October 1st: The State of Unions in San Francisco today

Mike CaseyMichael TheriaultIt was back to politics on Tuesday: Leaders of organized labor spoke about the movement’s relevance. PHDC’s regular monthly meeting featured Mike Casey (left), President of the San Francisco Labor Council, and Michael Theriault, Secretary-Treasurer of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council. Though frequently in solidarity, their respective organizations are not always in agreement on some issues. As always, there was ample time for audience interaction -  which continued after the meeting was adjourned.

We also had a recap of the fabulously fun and successful auction the Club held Saturday. THANK YOU AUCTION DONORS!
